Choosing mezzanine access

Angle is the first thing to settle. AS 1657 groups fixed access by slope: stairways, step-type ladders at 60 to 70 degrees and rung ladders at 70 to 90 degrees. The difference is felt on every climb. A step-type ladder like the Mezzalad gives a forward-facing climb and descent, where a vertical rung ladder has you backing down over the edge, and a staircase is easier again but takes several times the floor space.

The second is the opening. Wherever a ladder meets the mezzanine, the gap in the edge protection needs guarding so it cannot be left open, which is why the Mezzalad pairs handrails on both sides with an upper-floor safety gate that keeps the perimeter railing intact.
